Programmable AC Power Source GENESYS AC — Loan Program for On-site Evaluation
What is an AC Power Source (Basics and Use Cases of Programmable AC power supplies)
An AC power source (programmable AC power supply) can generate and precisely control arbitrary AC waveforms, frequencies and voltages. It is widely used for product evaluation, immunity testing and field fault diagnosis, and is essential for reproducing realistic operational power conditions. Detailed features are as follows:
Core Functions
- Arbitrary waveform generation: not only sine waves, but distorted waveforms, voltage dips, interruptions, pulses, harmonic superposition, etc.
- Variable frequency: frequency settings per test requirements (range depends on model).
- Variable voltage: supports commercial ranges to 350Vac in single phase and 606Vac in Phase to Phase operation.
- High crest factor capability: Supports applications with high inrush current.
- Measurement, control and protection: voltage/current/Power/PF/THD measurement, overcurrent/overvoltage protection.
- Manual or Remote control (LAN/USB/GPIB, etc.)
Phase and Power Ranges
- Single-phase AC: suitable for residential, commercial and low-power testing.
- Three-phase AC: for higher-power residential, commercial and industrial equipment, inverter and motor testing; supports three-phase unbalance and interphase phase manipulation.
- High-capacity models (to 45kVA): user scalable to several hundred kVA via parallel operation and master/slave control.
Main Use Cases
- Product development and evaluation: power disturbances and flucuations, transient response, and overcurrent testing.
- Immunity test preparation: pre-checks "Pre-compliance" for IEC 61000-4-11 (voltage dips), IEC 61000-4-13 (harmonics), etc.

AC Product Test Environments (Why AC Power Sources are Needed Now)
The globalization of electrified goods, renewable energy and expansion of EV charging infrastructure has dramatically increased demand for AC-related testing. Programmable AC power sources, capable of reproducing diverse waveforms and transients, are particularly crucial in the following domains.
Key Application Areas
- Appliances & industrial equipment: Test to global power standards, verification of voltage dip and fluctuation tolerance
- Avionics, Aerospace & Marine: Simulate the variety of power scenarios, disturbances and critical conditions on various air, space and marine environments
- Third-party test labs: Perform standardized tests under multiple conditions in manual and automated modes
- EV chargers: Source power flucuations and disturbances, inrush current testing and EMC pre-evaluation
- Power Supply Testing: Test component power supplies in development and validation and finished products with imbedded power supplies to regional and global standards or customer specific requirements.
Power equipment: Endurance and transient testing of inverters, transformers, protection devices
Field Requirements (Examples)
- High-precision output voltage (stability): prevents false operation in precision equipment
- Fast response time (ms-scale): reproduces transients
- High crest factor capability: Supports high inrush currents with minimal distortion and shutdowns due to overcurrent.
- EMC/immunity and waveform distortion (THD) measurement and mitigation
Considerations When Selecting and Implementing AC Power Sources
In today's test environments, rack space and weight are more important than ever. A compact solution reduces footprint, and weight reduction allows flexibility and easy handling.
Issue: Legacy units that are large and heavy impede operation and service by consuming floor space and requiring equipment to lift and move.
Countermeasure: Prioritize high power-density compact units; compare rack height, weight and transport conditions; verify delivery routes and installation steps in advance.
Issue: As test equipment, safety can be of particular concern. It is important to consider how the AC source will be used and how it will be certified.
Countermeasure: Many organizations and countries require systems and equipment to be certified by a third party to CE/UL/global certifications.
Product Overview of Programmable AC Power Sources
AC power sources provide highly accurate AC output and can generate a wide variety of waveforms to reproduce potential abnormal power conditions. Case Examples: Solving Typical Installation Challenges for High Power AC Sources with GENESYS AC
Issue
- Demand for higher power AC sources is increasing creating issues such as dimensions exceeding human height, weights surpassing several hundred kilograms requiring lifting equipment, and installation locations with sufficient load-bearing capacity.
GENESYS AC Solutions (Examples)
- High power density enables same kVA at lower height → easier transport and rack space savings
- Parallel connectivity allows flexible capacity configuration → simpler partial replacement and expansion
Note
Most AC power sources are designed for 19-inch rack mounting, so width is comparable; height is the key differentiator.
Example: Size of AC Power Source when Constructing 45kVA
Since most AC power source are designed to be mounted in a 19-inch rack, the width is the same size, and the standard for size is based on height.

FAQ
Q. Can I create my own Waveforms?
A. Yes, the Genesys AC Arbitrary Waveform and Harmonics analysis option (included standard in GAC-PRO models), enables this functionality. Allowing the user to program up to 1024 points in a waveform, this can be done manually, or uploaded from our Virtual Control Panel, or from other control systems.
Q. Does my local input voltage and frequency affect the output capability?
A. No, the Genesys AC output is independent, and galvanically isolated from the input, allowing complete control and flexibility. The only restiriction is for single phase input below 170VAC, the power is reduced to 1500VA/W.
Q. Is there an IEEE/GPIB interface?
A. Yes, there is an option to add the GPIB interface to the products at the time of order/produciton.
Q. Are shipping costs charged?
