Q.
Why do MLCCs (Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors) generate heat with the ripple current?

A. An ideal capacitor does not self-heat with the charge and discharge current (ripple current) that enters and leaves. However, actual multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) have very low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and therefore will experience a small loss. This loss generates a small amount of heat, sometimes called Joule heating.
