FAQ
Q.
Does case size affect the allowable ripple current?
  • Kondensatoren
  • >
  • Keramik-Vielschichtkondensatoren (MLCC)

A. There is no definite answer to this, but if the power dissipation per unit time is the same, the amount of heat radiation is increased with MLCCs of greater case sizes because their surface areas are larger, and therefore, temperature increase can be suppressed. That is why the allowable ripple current increases. However, power dissipation tends to increase when the same capacitance is obtained with large case sizes because the ESR increases structurally. Therefore, actual data must be confirmed by product name in order to make an accurate judgment. TDK offers software for analyzing component characteristics (SEAT) on its webpage and lists allowable ripple current values of MLCCs by part number.
