TDK introduces extremely compact StandarD series disk varistors
TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) presents the EPCOS B72307S0* (StandarD S07 Compact Series) and B72310S0* (StandarD S10 Compact Series) series of extremely compact, leaded disk varistors. The new varistors cover a wide voltage range from 115 VRMS to 460 VRMS in the StandarD S07 Compact series and from 130 VRMS to 680 VRMS in the StandarD S10 Compact series. The maximum surge current capability of a single pulse current (8/20 µs) is up to 1200 A for the StandarD S07 Compact types, and up to 2500 A for the StandarD S10 Compact types. They offer a multiple surge current capability of 500 A (StandarD S07 Compact) or 1500 A (StandarD S10 Compact), according to UL 1449, 4th edition, type 5 listed. The varistors can be operated up to an ambient temperature of 105 °C without derating.
TDK offers extremely compact and robust varistors with 14 mm disk diameter
TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) presents the new EPCOS B72314S2* series (AdvanceD S14 Compact) of leaded disk varistors. The series covers a wide operating voltage ranging from 175 VRMS to 625 VRMS. The maximum surge current capability of a single pulse current (8/20 µs) is up to 6000 A. Furthermore, they offer a multiple surge current capability of 3000 A at 8/20 µs according to UL 1449, 4th edition, type 5 listed.

DK Corporation (TSE:6762) presents the EPCOS Compact S14 AdvanceD-MP series of metal oxide disk varistors that feature smaller dimensions with the same excellent performance as comparable S14 AdvanceD-MP types. The disk diameters of the new B72214P2* varistors range from 13 mm to 14 mm, a reduction of approximately 3 mm.

How to Use ESD/surge Protection Devices : Disk Varistors
Varistors can be used as suppressors to protect devices and circuits from transient abnormal voltages including an ESD (electrostatic discharge) and a lightning surge. For protection from a relatively large surge current (100A to 25kA), leaded disk varistors and SMD disk varistors are suitable. For protection from a larger surge current (approximately 25kA or more), block varistors, and strap varistors are suitable.
This article describes surge protection device applications for LED lighting system, inductive loads such as motors, motor with an electromagnetic brake, SSR (solid-state relay), load dump and field decay, joint boxes and power conditioners of solar power generation systems, important devices using a lightning transformer, and high-energy surge in industrial devices.
