Measurements of SRF (7): What will happen if I do not compensate for the short chip inductance of an impedance analyzer?

A. When the meter is compensating the short chip, meter will assume the short chip has 0 inductance. But the truth is that the short chip does have some parasitic inductance. When the compensation performed, the parasitic inductance will be compensated as part of the fixture parasitic. As the result, the meter has the offset of parasitic inductance. Once the short chip parasitic inductance becomes a part of the parasitic of the fixture, the parasitic of the gold short chip will always present. Therefore, ESL of the DUT will be lower due to the parasitic short chip inductance and thus higher SRF readings. (see Figure 1)*.

Once the short chip inductance is compensated, the measurement of the SRF will be the true data (see Figure 2).
