The demand for higher data rates at the edge has increased significantly. The adoption of cameras and video system has increased driven by the reduced footstep of these systems and their usage for safety, security and quality applications. Other systems like high-speed data logging devices, embedded web servers and monitoring systems require a timely data transmission.

Ultrasonic parking assistant is a key sensor for automated driving and parking functions. Ultrasonic parking sensors were in use in Europe long before debate on automated driving became active. TDK has for many years supplied Piezo Disks and ultrasonic driver transformers for use with ultrasonic parking sensors. TDK also developed a multilayer ceramic chip capacitor that exhibits attenuating capacitance (ZL characteristics) under high-temperature environments that is suitable for resonant circuits with Piezo Disk. This article presents Piezo Disk, ultrasonic driver transformers, and MLCC with ZL characteristics.

In resonant circuits used for wireless chargers and DC-DC converters, film capacitors have traditionally been used. However, advancements in the capacity expansion and high voltage resistance of Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) have made it possible to replace film capacitors with MLCCs in these applications. Switching from film capacitors to MLCCs offers benefits such as miniaturization and reduced losses.
Traditionally, aluminum electrolytic capacitors and tantalum electrolytic capacitors have been widely used for smoothing and decoupling applications that require large capacitance. With increasing capacitance values, MLCCs are replacing various electrolytic capacitors in power circuits and other applications.
In the automotive field, CPUs and FPGAs for systems that require advanced image processing, such as onboard ADAS ECUs and autonomous ECUs, need to operate at high speed and require high drive current in conjunction with the increasing performance and functionality of systems. Also, in the ICT field, power supply configurations that support higher current required for devices that need huge amounts of power such as servers. There is a trend towards higher operating speeds and higher currents in the power supply lines of systems with increased performance and functions as described above. At the same time, power supply structures that maintain the nominal voltage within narrow tolerance ranges, which have decreased in conjunction with processor miniaturization, are also required.

To make multilayer ceramic chip capacitors more compact with larger capacity, we drew on TDK's advanced material technologies, making the particle sizes super fine. By putting our original processing technologies to full use, we have perfected the advanced layering technique which ensures the precise placing of dielectric and electrode layers, as well as the multilayering technology capable of as many as 1000 layers. The thickness of each layer is at a submicron level. By reducing the thickness of each layer and increasing the number of layers, even the ultrasmall chip combines the capacity close to that of tantalum capacitors with excellent reliability.
