Surge arresters are hermetically sealed gas discharge tubes consisting of two or three electrodes properly spaced by insulators and filled with a noble gas. The main purpose of the surge arrester is to provide a conductive path for unwanted and excessive transients, thereby preventing the transient energy and voltages from damaging equipment and components as well as causing harm to people. Characteristic for surge arresters are the high current capability and the independence of environmental influences. Thanks to their high dielectric strength and low capacitance arresters have virtually no impact to the system they protect, a vital factor in telecommunications installations, the main application for surge arresters.
