TDK has recently expanded its lineup of 3-terminal feedthrough filters, known as the "YFF Series."
With advancements in automotive electronic systems aimed at enhancing safety, comfort, and infotainment capabilities, there is an increasing demand for measures to prevent system malfunctions.
To suppress voltage variation and high-frequency noise, which can cause such malfunctions, numerous capacitors are typically employed. However, the trend toward miniaturization of these systems raises concerns about mounting space limitations due to the increased number of components.
To address these challenges, 3-terminal feedthrough filters, characterized by low ESL (Equivalent Series Inductance), are gaining significant demand. Their high noise suppression effectiveness is expected to reduce the number of components and improve performance characteristics.

TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) announces the X1 capacitors of the EPCOS B3291xH/J4 series for power line filtering of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) in demanding automotive and industrial applications with a rated AC voltage of up to 480 V. Applications that are exposed to harsh climatic conditions such as PV inverters and EV onboard chargers (OBCs) can benefit from the new X1 capacitors’ high resistance to high humidity environments. With the ability to continuously handle a DC voltage of 1000 V, this series is a dedicated solution for DC EMC of high-voltage EV platforms.

The X1 capacitors are THB-tested (temperature, humidity, bias) at +85 °C, 85% relative humidity for 1000 hours at 380 V (AC) and 1000 V (DC), and they can operate at temperatures up to +110 °C.

Featuring self-healing properties, the series covers capacitance values from 15 nF to 10.0 µF and boasts a compact design, with dimensions ranging from 18.0 x 10.5 x 5.0 mm to 57.5 x 57 x 45 mm, depending on the capacitance. Lead spacings vary between 15 mm and 52.5 mm, with the largest versions equipped with 4 pins for enhanced mechanical stability on the PCB. The series is certified according to ENEC, UL, and CSA standards.

On Board Chargers (OBCs) installed in electric vehicles are becoming increasingly powerful, with an output power of 22 kW. Even at higher power output levels, it is not acceptable to increase the size of the OBC itself, so compact design is required. Capacitors for the resonant circuit function are required to have high withstand voltage and low loss products that can withstand higher power densities than conventional products.
In order to meet this demand, TDK has released a new autograde C0G MLCC series with a rated voltage of 1250 V.

Through an example of the operation of a resonant capacitor in an LLC resonant converter, we will introduce why we recommend a 1250V rated C0G MLCC.

With the increasing market for electrified vehicles (EVs), the demand for on-board chargers (OBCs) is growing fast. OBCs open up the possibility to charge the car not only at fast-charging DC stations but also with AC sources in a reasonable time. Such systems are currently going up to 22 kW with operating voltages up to 800 V. The function of the OBC is to convert the AC voltage from an external source to a specific DC voltage that is based on the requirements of the battery management system. By this, a battery-saving and fast charging process can be reached. Especially in remote areas without sufficient fast DC charging infrastructure, OBCs are essential to make EVs more attractive.
Due to the complexity of such systems, the OBC needs a certain bulk capacitance to stabilize the DC voltage that is charging the battery. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are an attractive solution here since they can fulfill the key requirements, such as high voltage ratings of up to 500 V, large capacitance of up to 820 µF and high ripple current capabilities at an operating temperature range of -40 °C to 105 °C.
